Songs of Eternity – All for Cheeni Kam

I must say that Shreya Ghoshal is one lucky singer who has got to sing some of the classic compositions of the great Ilayaraja in his upcoming so called musical comeback in Hindi films – Cheeni Kam. With Tabu looking so aesthetic, Amitabh looking so stylish, the dialogues sounding so witty, the songs being so full of romance, I wonder how the movie will turn out to be! Reviews say that this is a comedy cum romance between a 64 year old chef and a woman in her early 30’s, with the love factor not being deliberate! I have always had a fetish for movies that weave around conversations full of quick wit, sarcasm, humor, banter, and coy bundled with romance to die for. :) One such movie that I comes to my mind is ‘As Good As It Gets’ starring Jack Nicolson and Helen Hunt. What a movie!

Coming back to the Music of Cheeni Kam

The title track – Cheeni Kam Hai aka Mandram Vandha Thendralikku – should I say anything about the song? The tune is an unrivaled masterpiece. While IR has retained the essence of the song to a great extent with a change in the music in between the paragraphs (anupallavis) and a very teeny-weeny modification of tune in the anupallavi ending - probably to suit Shreya’s voice range, unlike how SPB could stop at very high notes. Shreya’s voice and the sensuous beats haunt your soul. This has a pathos version as well that sounds okay.

Baatein Hawa Hai Saari aka Kuzhaloothum Kannanikku – Somehow I cant get over Radha running in between the lush green trees in white saree. However, this song has 2 versions – one with Amitabh’s sarcastic anecdotes, and one without. Believe me you if you are the one who loves men with husky sophisticated voice, this is one man who will bowl you over completely! Again the music in between the paragraphs (anu pallavis) is different and new. Sounds nice. I like this song.

Jaane Do Naa aka Jotheyali (from kannada movie Geetha) – A blockbuster hit song in Kannada way back in late 80’s, this song is still the favorite among most of the people when asked about romantic favorites. That’s the magic of this song. It is my favorite song too, though I have my own reasons for it. Again a priceless masterpiece by IR. In Hindi, the lyrics sound very apt and very good. I like this song the best, among all the three. Shreya’s magic mantra that worked for Jadoo Hai Nasha Hai in Jism seems to be working in this as well. Surely to become a hit number.

Rest are all BGM’s that sound very melodious. If you want to feel nostalgic and if you are curious to see how IR has cleverly managed to use his best compositions so judiciously to impress the Hindi audience, do listen to the songs. Definitely worth a listen.

Adiya, thanks for the inspiration! :)

hey thats nice review.. :) kewl effort.

i born underthe hoods of IR/SPB melodies as a tresspasser. somehow i couldn;t take out S.P.B in these classical renderings.

Mandram Vandhal thendralukku - S.P.B, Revathis sails before me..

Mela Thiradhu kadhal.. is the movie of the second song. yet another classical as u mentioned ... my night song playlist..

next is Jaane Do Naa how to name it.. all 3 are awesome..

i wonder about this song history. i started with a tamil blockbuster 100th naal - hair raising thriller.

song is -> Vizhiyile mani vizhiyil mouna mozhi pesum vannam

then got into kannada audience as jothiali jothe jothialli... what a improvisiation from S.P.B..

now its tagged with Shreya Ghosal. getting this sounds needs some time for me..

but few open-> ended questions to me..

1. Will Maniratham allow his master piece mouna ragam song to another movie ?
2. Does this shades out S.P.Bs classicall out-fit with IR combo ?
3. Ya Shreya is really lucky to get that ?
4. Compare to this initally i said rehashing of IR in the mail. but i would say he is carrying his master piece to next generation by coating it with extra singers

mmm.. lot more to think and discuss offline. :)

its usual among all composers kind of template library in s/w..
i have seen a.r.r also doing this quite often though his outcome is carefully chosen and throwed out..

Some examples are
1. Thaiaduthey Thavi adhdhey - En-Swasakattery movie to hindi

2. Mamboove Awesome typicla mallu folkish rendering ( Yodha ) to simple tamil folkish Sevvanm Chinna - Pavithra movie

and so on and on.. i am seeing this as challenge among singers..

but when it comes to S.P.B i am kind of doubtful

couple of years back we had a tamil movie exactly of similar lines. not as rich as cheeni kum but amazing performance from prakash-raj. any ways its all packaging.

but i like Jack Nicolson very much.. one of the legendary actor with Object Oriented performance. i got into JK with the film few good mens and till the latest Departed.

he some how resemblance our (tamil) yester year scary villan P.s.Veerappa( year 1960s).
face, walking style, scary laughing etc shades out to be P.S.Veerappa.

may be who knows JK would have copied P.S.Veerappa.. :)

Hey I really donno which villain you are talking about. But yes, as far as Jack Nicolson is concerned, wonderful actor. I feel Amitabh's character is very much based on JK's character in As Good As It Gets. Few Good Men is another brilliant movie.

What you are saying about Music Directors is true. ARR is the best example here, coz he's the one who keeps shuffling same songs in Hindi and Tamil. However, most of the times I feel this shuffling does not work well, its like dubbing Roja in Hindi and the village backdrop just cannot go with the Hindi Style of cinema, and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. That's what, I have told in the end, IR is clever here, using his best numbers for Bachhan's movie, people will definitely give it a ear, come what may. So that's what I said.

Rest, yes - SPB for Mandram Vandha - unforgettable classic, no one can beat all this. In hindi, they have completely transferred the moods of the song, it's more on romance, no pathos feeling, except for one version, which is definitely not upto the mark.

Music is universal, let everyone listen and enjoy. :) When Mani and IR can market their babies for money, then I guess, no harm in us turining a bit nonreligious. :)

Mutually Xculsive comments :)

by all means i feel some legendray performance getting overriden ... as as equal to remix of a olden song or type of replace venkateshwara suprabhatam - MSS combo with some other grt8 singers now like Sudha mam, r BJ etc. they definitely justify that song but Classic is different.

i feel Sooni Sooni - Vijay Prakash song should have given to S.P.B and he would thrashed shreyas melody battle.. :) anyways.. nice tuff discussion .. Jute.

haha! :) You think SPB would've agreed? I definitely dont think so...:)))
